Commentary of Rabbenu Bachaye on the Torah - Naples, 1492 - First Edition - Missing Pages
Commentary of Rabbenu Bachaye on the Torah - Bereshit and Shemot. [Naples: Azriel ben Yosef (Gunzenhauser) Ashkenazi, 1492]. At the beginning of Sefer Shemot is a page with a magnificently illustrated woodcut border containing flowers, peacocks, horses, angels and other illustrations.
First edition, incunable. This edition was the basis for the dozens of subsequent editions of this volume.
Many handwritten corrections and notations of sources and references. Several unidentified long glosses [Oriental script - Eretz Israel or Turkey-Salonika, ca. 1500s]. Other long glosses in different handwriting [Yemen?].
Two incomplete volumes, including: parts of Sefer Bereshit (a torn page from Parashat Bereshit, Parashat Lech-Lecha until VaYehi) and Sefer Shemot (except for one leaf in the middle and last leaf).
Sefer Bereshit: [51] leaves, (out of [75] originally). Sefer Shemot contains [72] leaves (out of [74] originally). Altogether [123] leaves (out of [149] originally) for Sefer Bereshit and Shemot. The complete book contained [288] leaves originally. 27 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains, wear and tears, cut margins, repaired damage. Sefer Bereshit is unbound; Sefer Shemot is bound with new leather binding.
These volumes were also printed concurrently in Spain or Portugal. Only sections are extant, and it is unclear whether the printing was completed during the Spanish Expulsion.
