Item Overview

Description:

Jerusalem: Panoramic View from the Tower of the Church of the Redeemer – Leipzig, 1898 – Large-Format Edition
Jerusalem Rundblick vom Turme der Erlöserkirche, by Bruno Hentschel. Leipzig: Bruno Hentschel, 1898. Large-format edition.
Wide panorama by the Austrian photographer Bruno Hentschel, depicting Jerusalem as seen from the tower of the Church of the Redeemer in the Old City, shortly after its inauguration by Kaiser Wilhelm II.
The panorama comprises eleven numbered photographs, with corresponding numerals referring to a legend identifying the sites (legend lacking). The photographs are mounted on card album leaves, bound accordion-style in a decorated binding.
Bruno Hentschel, born in Salzburg, worked as a photographer and publisher in Leipzig. In the late 1890s he founded the Kunst-Verlag Bruno Hentschel, specializing in photographs, photo albums, and slides. He later established a studio in Jerusalem, which served as a base for photographic expeditions throughout the Levant, North Africa, and Southern Europe. In 1898 he was among the photographers accompanying Kaiser Wilhelm II on his visit to Palestine, and in 1900 he published an album documenting the journey.

Photographs: 23.5X308 cm. Leaves: 35X308 cm. Overall good condition. Minor stains. Leaves detached. Lacking the legend originally issued with the panorama. Binding worn and defective. Inscription to front cover, abraded.
