Item Overview
Description:
Collection of Photographs of Jerusalem – Bruno Hentschel – Late 19th Century
Twenty-one large-size photographs printed by Bruno Hentschel, most of them of Jerusalem, and the remainder of other places in the Holy Land. Leipzig: Kunst-Verlag von Bruno Hentschel, 1898 [some photos possibly from other years around the same time].
Included among the photos: "Diligences " (closed French stagecoaches) near Jaffa Gate (three copies); Church of the Redeemer adorned with flags of the German imperial house (on the occasion of the official visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II?); the Temple Mount as seen from the Western Wall; photo taken from one of the rooftops of Jerusalem’s Old City (toward the Tower of David and Moses Montefiore’s Windmill); photo of Haifa’s German Colony; and more.
Most of the photos are signed and titled in the negative, and mounted onto plates of thick paper, with the name of the printing house and its identifying details listed in the margin; one of the photos is signed "Bonfils" in the negative, and is mounted onto a plate bearing the markings of the official stationery of the Bruno Hentschel company.
21 photographs, approx. 21X27.5 cm. Varying condition, ranging from good to good-fair. Stains, slight bending, and blemishes to plates.
