Item Overview

Description:

Hand-Colored Map of Jerusalem – After Juan Bautista Villalpando – ca. 1720
Ierusalem – Hand-colored engraved map. No imprint. [Ca. 1720]. Legend in French.
Imaginary reconstruction of Jerusalem, based on the 1604 plan by Jesuit scholar Juan Bautista Villalpando. The Temple Mount is shown elevated on monumental substructures, alongside the royal palace ("La Ville de David"), city streets, walls, and other buildings.
Surrounding the map, within a broad border, are additional vignettes – some based on the map by Richard Blome (London, 1687) – including a Renaissance-style Temple rendered as a European palace, Temple vessels (menorah, altars, table), the High Priest, King Solomon in Eastern attire, and more.

Engraved map: 39.5X46.5 cm (printed on two joined sheets; verso blank). Good condition. Minor blemishes. Inscription to verso. Mounted.

See: Eran Laor Map Collection, National Library of Israel, Jer 431, R 36 B 1008.
