Two Letters from Sir Moses Montefiore - To Rabbi Shmuel Salant
Two letters from Sir Moses Montefiore addressed to R. Shmuel Salant: • Letter from Moses Montefiore, addressed to R. Shmuel Salant "Head of the Beit Din of the Prushim community", and to the trustees of the community in Jerusalem - R. Moshe Haslowitz (Cheshin) and R. Nissan Madpis (Beck), regarding monetary matters. London, 1852. Written by the secretary Eliezer HaLevi, with Montefiore's Hebrew and English signatures. • Congratulations letter from Moses Montefiore to R. Shmuel Salant - wishes on the occasion of R. Shmuel's wedding (third marriage). Ramsgate, UK, 1872. Montefiore's official stationery. The letter was written by the secretary Eliezer HaLevi, with Montefiore's signature. R. Shmuel Salant decided to immigrate to Eretz Israel in the summer of 1840, and accompanied R. Moshe Rivlin on his journey there. Due to a war which broke out then between the Sultan and Mohammad Ali, the two were compelled to remain in Constantinople. At that time, they met and made acquaintance with Sir Moses Montefiore, who had come to defend the Jews falsely accused in the Damascus Blood Libel. Since then, Montefiore upkept a friendly relationship with R. Shmuel and would seek his counsel in the distribution of charity monies in Jerusalem. In his third marriage (mentioned in Montefiore's letter), R. Shmuel Salant married the granddaughter of R. Moshe Rivlin. Two letters. Size varies. Overall good condition. Folding marks. Tape repairs to one letter.
