A script by Isaac Babel based on the story "Wandering Stars" (Blondzhende Shtern) by Sholem Aleichem – the love story of a boy and girl who flee their shtetl to join a troupe of wandering players.
Front cover illustration and the three additional illustrations were created by Russian-Jewish artist Alexander Bykhovsky.
Alexander Yakovlevich Bykhovsky (Александр Яковлевич Быховский; 1888-1978) was born in Mogilev and received a traditional Jewish education. He studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg under the guidance of Nikolai Roerich. Among other things, he was engaged in painting and designed scenery and costumes for the theater.
His works were exhibited in various exhibitions, including one held at the Habima Theater (1923). Bykhovsky specialized in painting portraits and landscapes and was known for his realistic style depicting rural and urban life in Russia. He was the first illustrator of Isaac Babel's works.
80 pages (including cover). Title page missing (possibly last page missing as well). Approx. 22 cm. Fair-good condition. Most pages and cover detached. Stains and minor tears. Inscriptions and stamps on rear cover. Blemishes and wear to edges of cover. Spine torn.
