Das Bildnis, eine Novelle [The Portrait, a Novella], by Nikolai Gogol, translated into German by Alexander Eliasberg. Stuttgart: Julius Hoffmann, 1920. German.
German translation of the novella "The Portrait" by Nikolai Gogol, first published in 1835 as part of the story collection "Arabesques" (Арабески) – the story of a young, talented and impoverished artist named Andrei Chartkov, who acquires a mysterious portrait that brings him wealth and paves his way into high society, but simultaneously corrupts his soul and leads to the destruction of his life.
Accompanied by numerous illustrations by Vasily Masyutin (Василий Николаевич Масютин; 1884-1955). born in Riga, Masyutin studied art in Moscow and specialized in printmaking. From 1921 he lived in Berlin, where he engaged in painting and sculpture, and especially in graphic design and book illustration.


[4], 95, [1] pages. 24.5 cm. Good condition. Minor stains. Blemishes and minor wear to edges of binding; tear along spine.
