Photograph of Injured Passengers of the Theodor Herzl Illegal Immigration Ship – Haifa Port, 1947
Black and white press photograph documenting injured passengers of the Theodor Herzl illegal immigration ship. Haifa port, 1947.
The Theodor Herzl ship embarked from Port de Sète (France) on April 2, 1947 with 2600 illegal immigrants. While at sea, the ship was discovered by the British and two destroyers were sent to take over the ship. A violent confrontation developed between the British forces and the immigrants claiming the lives of three passengers and injuring dozens more. Finally, the ship was brought to the Haifa port and its passengers were sent to detention camps in Cyprus.
This photo portrays four injured people lying on stretchers at the port surrounded by groups of soldiers and onlookers.
On the verso of the photo is a note with information for the press (in English), above the ink-stamp "International News Photo". The note also states the name of the photographer - H. Mendelson (presumably the German photographer Hugo Mendelson, 1918-2012).
17X20.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains on verso and to margins (not affecting photo). Acidic adhesive tape on verso (at the margins). Minor damages.
