Set of Machzorim Following the Carpentras Rite (France) – Amsterdam, 1739-1762 – First, Rare Edition – Complete Set in Four Volumes
Set of machzorim according to Carpentras rite (France), for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, the Three Festivals and the Four Fasts and Parashiot. Amsterdam: Hertz Levi Rofe (vols. I and II), and Partners Hertz Levi Rofe and son-in-law Kosman (vols. III and IV), [1739-1762]. Complete set in four volumes.
First edition of the machzor following the rite unique to the Carpentras community (south-eastern France), printed to provide for the growing needs of the community, which could not anymore be fulfilled with handwritten copies. The machzor for the High Holidays was printed in 600 copies only, and is therefore particularly rare.
Four volumes. Vol. I (Rosh Hashanah): [2], 14, [1], 15-17, [1], 18-71, [6], 72-114 leaves. Extra copies of leaves 22-23 bound between leaves 113-114. Vol. II (Yom Kippur): [2], 185 leaves. Vol. III (Three Festivals): [2], 219 leaves. Without [3] final leaves (customs of the L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue community, found in some copies only). Vol. IV (Four Fasts and Four Parashiot): [2], 3, 5-151, [1] leaves. Approx. 16-20 cm. Overall good-fair condition. Stains, including dampstains. Wear to some volumes. Some loose and detached leaves (including title page of vol. III). Tears, including open tears slightly affecting text. Worming to vol. IV, affecting text. Several inscriptions. Early leather bindings (non-uniform). Wear, tears and damage to bindings.
There are several variants of vol. III on the Three Festivals. Some copies, such as the present one, do not contain the text of Birkat HaMazon, and have different pagination (as listed in the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book).
