Item Overview

Description:

Tzemach Tzedek - Piskei Dinim - Vilna, 1884 - First Edition - Copy with the Remark "I Did Not Merit to Understand His Holy Words"
Tzemach Tzedek - Piskei Dinim, novellae and halachic rulings following the order of the Tur, Shulchan Aruch and their commentators, by Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch. Vilna, 1884. First edition.
Two parts in one volume. Part I on Orach Chaim and Yoreh De'ah, Part II on Even HaEzer and Choshen Mishpat.
At the end of part II, there are two leaves with selections on various topics (leaves 69-70). On p. 69b, the Tzemach Tzedek quotes the Gaon of Vilna, remarking "I did not merit to understand his holy words". There are however copies which read "VeEinah Teshuvah" (this is not a refutation; see previous item). The Lubavitcher rebbe explained that the printers replaced the words of the Tzemach Tzedek with the text seen in this copy "I did not merit to understand his holy words", and when the first copies reached Lubavitch, the censored leaves were quickly replaced with the original version of the Tzemach Tzedek.
The present copy contains the original printed text. In this copy, which was owned by R. Moshe Yehuda Leib Landau Rabbi of Bnei Brak, the words were deleted in pen, and the corrected text "VeEinah Teshuvah" was written in the margins.
Stamps of R. Moshe Yehuda Leib Landau Rabbi of Bnei Brak and other stamps.
[2], 286, [2], 50; 70 leaves. Two title pages for each part. 22 cm. Dry, brittle paper. Good-fair condition. Stains. Minor wear. Marginal creases and tears to several leaves. Minor worming. Several detached leaves and gatherings. Binding damaged and torn.
