Map of Canaan – John Speed (After Ortelius) – London, 1676 – Hand-Colored Engraving
Canaan, map of Canaan, the Sinai Peninsula and part of Egypt. Hand-colored engraving, from "A prospect of the most famous parts of the world" by John Speed [London: Thomas Basset and Richard Chiswell, 1676 (engraving dated 1651)]. English.
Map of Canaan, after a map by Abraham Ortelius (based on Tilemann Stella). The map depicts the country on both sides of the Jordan River, divided into the territories of the Twelve Tribes and showing the route of the Israelites in the Sinai Desert, and the location of the Tribes around the Tabernacle. The shoreline runs from Byblos on the slopes of the Lebanon mountain to the Delta of the Nile.
In the upper left corner – a map of ancient Jerusalem (after Benito Arias Montano) and around it, seven medallions with illustrations of the Temple vessels.
On the upper part of the map, an ornate cartouche, with the figures of Moses with the Tablets of the Law and Aaron in priestly garb placed on both its sides.
Along the shoreline, an illustration depicting the story of Jonah the Prophet. English text on verso – "The description of Palestine" (pp. 55-56).
Engraved map: approx. 52X39 cm (printed on two conjoined sheets of paper), Fair condition. Stains, some dark. Creases and tears. Open tears to edges (not affecting the engraving), reinforced with strips of paper on verso. Matted.
