Holy of Holies: A Piece of Straw (Shtroy) from the Bed of the Holy Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk, of Blessed Memory
“For protection, blessing, and success” – a holy piece of shtroy (straw in Yiddish) that lay beneath the bed of the beloved tzaddik of Israel, the holy Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk, of blessed and revered memory. This small piece of straw is preserved in lamination within a designed card. On the back, the lineage is recorded: “I am writing word for word as our father told me…” explaining how the shtroy came into the possession of the family of heirs—a well-known and respected family with a recognized tradition of holding this sacred item. The card is signed by Rabbi Yitzchak Pesach Schmerler, a descendant of the holy rabbi.
The Schmerler Family Lineage to Rabbi Elimelech of Blessed Memory:
 • The holy rabbi, Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk, author of “Noam Elimelech”
 • His daughter, the Rebbetzin Mirish, wife of Rabbi Eliyahu Alovitz of Sadeh Lavan
 • Their son, Rabbi Pinchas Elimelech
 • His son, Rabbi Eliezer Lipa of Zborov
 • His son-in-law, Rabbi Naftali Baer Merilus of Litaovisk
 • His son-in-law, Rabbi Moshe Meir Schmerler
 • His son, Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael
 • His son, Rabbi Eliyahu Shmuel Schmerler, head of the Sanz yeshivas
 • (Rabbi Yitzchak Pesach, who signed the card before us)
