Prayer Book for the Jewish Holidays according to the Custom of Pitigliano - Nice Acadian Script - Italy - the Late 19th Century
Manuscript containing prayers, Techinot and Piyyutim for the Jewish holidays. Nice, orderly scribal, Acadian script. Some of the prayers are vowelized. Ink on paper. Italy, the late 19th century.
On the second leaf: "Seder Slichot which is said in the community of Pitigliano from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur…". On leaf 10a: Seder Hatart Nedarim which was done here in Pitigliano on the eve of Rosh Ha'Shana and Yom Kippur". Tikun MInchat Shovavim. Prayer for livelihood, Seder Se'udat Rosh Ha'Shana, Seder Teki'at Shofar with Kabbalistic intentions, Seder Tashlich, Piyyutim for Yom Kippur. Seder Hakafot for Simchat Torah. On leaf 76a: "On MIncha of Simchat Torah it is customary here in Pitigliano to take ten Torah scrolls out of the Holy Ark…" with a Piyyut for each and every Hakafah. On leaf 94a: "Mi Sh'Berach" for the synagogue. Prayers for the night of Tishah Be'Av. At the beginning of the prayers and Piyyutim, Hebrew and Italian instructions.
The community of Pitigliano – a small town near Grosseto in the Italian region of Tuscany. The Jewish settlement there began in the 15th century. The Jewish community flourished and synagogues, a Beit Midrash and a Jewish cemetery were built there. During the occupation of Italy by Napoleon, the Jewish community suffered pogroms and several of its members were arrested. In 1930, 70 Jews remained in the town and in 2005, only three.
106 written leaves. Until leaf 57, all the prayers are vowelized. Approximately half of the volume is made of empty leaves.
