Silver pendant with original bronze prutah of Antonius Felix, procurator of Judea under Claudius, 54 C.E.

Antoninus Felix was the Roman governor of Judaea from 52-58 CE, during the reigns of Claudius and Nero. He was a corrupt official and cruel arbiter. The second of his three wives was Drusilla the daughter of King Agrippa I. He struck two coins, one with crossed palm branches the other depicting a palm tree and crossed shields. Depicting a palm tree one of the seven agricultural species of the Land of Israel at least showed a certain consideration for the religious sensitivities of the Jewish populace.

Size: 2.5 X 1.9 centimeter approximately.

Total weight (the pendant and the coin): 4.4 grams approximately.

DESCRIPTION

A bronze prutah of Antonius Felix, procurator of Judea under Claudius, 54 C.E.

Obv: Two oblong shields and two spears crossed surrounded by Greek inscription NEPW KΛAY KAICAP ('Nero Claudius Caesar').

Rev: Palm tree and inscription BRIT LIΔ KAI ('Brittanicus, year 14 of Caesar').
