Olive wood spice tower for the Havdalah service. Barrel shaped footed spice tower; in central section carvings of the Western Wall and the Tombs of the Davidic Dynasty, above which is inked in Hebrew. On the top section which is open to enable one to smell the spices there is stamped in black ink “Jerusalem” in Hebrew and English. At the bottom of the middle section is a marquetry frieze. The flag is a later addition. The Ottoman Period 1517-1917 saw a number of fine buildings constructed at the beginning and the walls of the city of Jerusalem built by Suleiman the Magnificent from 1537-1541. This was followed by a sharp decline as the centres of the Ottoman Empire were the Balkans and Anatolia. The rediscovery of the Holyland by the Christian West in the mid-19th cent brought prosperity based on religious tourism with an accompanied burgeoning of craft industries.
