The Rebbe, Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman (1814-1880), the third son of the "Tzemach Tzedek". After his father's death, he served for three years as the Rebbe of Lubavitch. In 1869, he was replaced by his brother Rabbi Shmuel as Rebbe and head of the Beit Midrash of Lubavitch and he moved his Hassidic court to Liadi, the hometown of his grandfather, author of the "Tanya". It is told of him that when he prayed, he did so with such enthusiasm that he used to forget where he was.
Rabbi Yehuda Leib Schneersohn, the son of the Rebbe of Liadi Rabbi Yitzchak Dobver Schneersohn, was a rabbi in Vitebsk even after 1917, when the communist regime used to harass the Jews.
