מנהיג, שמן על בד, 40x50 ס"מ, חתום, ממוסגר.יוסל ברגנר, ישראלי, יליד אוסטריה, 2017-1920. בשנת 1937, עם התגברות האנטישמיות, היגרה המשפחה למלבורן, אוסטרליה. שם, למד אמנות והצטרף ל"חברה לאמנות בת זמננו", שביקשה להתנער מן הציור האקדמי באוסטרליה. צירתו המוקדמת של ברגנר, מתקופת שהותו באוסטרליה מאופיינת בסגנון ריאליסטי וחברתי. עבודות אל ואופיינו במשיכות מכחול בולטות, בשימוש בצבעים כהים ובאימפסטו כבד. החל משנות החמישים של המאה ה-20 בולטת ביצירתו הנטייה למעבר מציור ריאליסטי, אל ציור סמבולי, המושפע מן האמנות הסוריאליסטית. בעבודות אלו הופיעו דימויים כגון כלי בית או דמויות סמליות, המשקפים זכרונות מן העיירה היהודית
