Peridot, or in its Hebrew name Petda, is the birthstone of the month of August. This is an unusual gemstone, in that it exists in only one color - vivid green, reminiscent of the colors of plants in spring, and does not change even under the influence of artificial light.
The origin of the name Peridot
The Peridot gemstone has other names and sometimes there is even confusion regarding its name. The origin of the name Peridot may come from the Arabic word "Faridat" which means "gem", or from the Greek word "peridona" which means "to give wealth".
Another name for the peridot stone is Chrysolite (Chrysolite) from a Greek word that means "golden stone", a name indicating the yellow gold luster of the stone. The stone is also sometimes known as olivine, which is the main chemical component of the stone.
The peridot in Judaism
One of the stones that appears in the high priest's breastplate is petda. Over the years, in the various translations of the Bible, the name Patada was translated to topaz. According to what is mentioned in the Roman writer Pliny the Elder (58 AD), the topaz was a green stone, probably peridot, which was found in a geographical area close to the Land of Israel.
Healing properties of the peridot
In the past it was believed that the stone had the power to fight demons and drive them away. The stone was considered to reduce thirst in severe illness and bring joy because of its cheerful green color.
The stone is credited with the ability to heal and bring vitality to the whole body. It is said to increase patience, confidence and assertiveness. Peridot is considered a stress reliever, stimulates the mind and is believed to bring emotional balance, is beneficial for healing a wounded heart and ego and clears the way to the heart.
