LEGENDRE ADRIEN-MARIE: (1752-1833) French mathematician who made numerous important contributions to mathematics, including the concepts Legendre polynomials and Legendre transformation, both of which are named after him. An extremely rare series of autograph calculations in the hand of Legendre, unsigned, two pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (c.1785). In a neat hand Legendre has penned his equations in eight different tables, each comprising eleven lines of figures, the tables each labelled at the head with a different sign of the zodiac, including le Vereau (Aquarius), le Sagittaire (Saggitarius), le Capricorne (Capricorn), les Gemeaux (Cancer), la Balance (Libra) and les Poissons (Pisces) etc. The equations relate to Legendre's research in calculating the precise distance between Paris and Greenwich. At around the same time Legendre prepared the present calculations he published papers on celestial mechanics, including Recherches sur la figure des planètes ('Research on the shape of the planets', 1784). In 1787 the mathematician became a member of a team that performed a triangulation survey between the Paris and Greenwich observatories, which was done in connection with measurements on the size of the Earth. This work resulted in Legendre being elected to the Royal Society of London in 1787.
