French Brandon Judaica print of Dayan Cardozo Sermoning at Amsterdam Synagogue 1866
Artistic renditions of Jewish ritual: "The Sermon of Dayan Cardozo at the Synagogue of Amsterdam, 22 July 1866" (subtitle in French); print of etching by Jules Lavee based on an original oil painting by Jacob-Emile-Edouard Brandon, on full page (73) of the French "Le Monde Illustre" publication (no date, but article is about the 1867 Universal Exposition); full size: 26.2 x 35.8cm. Light horizontal folds, two repaired tears c. 2.5cm at bottom, light folds at bottom right corner; suitable for framing. The depicted Synagogue is the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam; the speaker is the Rabbinical judge (Dayan) David de Jahacob Lopez Cardozo (1808–1890). The original artist, Brandon (1831 - 1897), was a French Jew famous for his works on Jewish themes.
