The Dutch artist Corneille was born Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, and was one of the founders of the very expressionist postwar European art movement COBRA.

Corneille not only painted, but also wrote poetry for COBRA’s magazine, of which there were ten issues, dating from 1948-1951 when the group was active. Strongly influenced by Miró, Klee and Van Gogh, as well as by the art of children, Corneille’s work is known for its bold colours and use of everyday subjects (such as domestic pets like cats and birds) placed in slightly surreal, often childlike environments. His work is held in thAe collections of museums including the Centre Georges Pompidou and Tate Modern
