AN ELABORATE INDIAN SHIELD WITH GOLD AND SILVER DAMASCENE, CA. 19TH C.

This is an elaborate and exquisitely made Indian shield of the 18th or 19th century. The surface is completely covered in gold and silver damascene showing intricate foliate designs throughout. There is an inscription in the Indo-Perisan Farci that is hard to translate. A few words we could read refer to "the shield and universe". Each of the four roundels is adorned with cross-shaped plants and similarly fine inlay. The center of the shield bears a circular Farsi inscription which appears to be of the Indian dialect, though we have not been able to fully translate it. The reverse of the shield retains its original grip straps and cushion along with their striking red fabric.

This type of shield would have been used by grabbing both of the straps in the hand rather than passing one's arm through them. By doing this, Indian warriors of this time could more easily project the shield forward to meet their opponent's weapon. The style of fighting often seen with these shields looks akin to boxing to an outside observer, with the shield being thrust outward like a punch rather than simply used as a defensive tool.

W: 13.75 in. (34.93 cm.)

Condition: Very good overall with some minor dents on the roundels and some minor surface rust. One of the straps are broken on the back but still present.
