AN INDIAN COMBINATION MATCHLOCK AXE, 19TH CEN.
An ax combined with a matchlock and a barrel. The barrel is at the same time as the handle of the axe. The axe head is small and crescent-shaped. The blade itself is decorated with borders in 'wriggle-cut' engraving. This is fastened to a square iron shaft that becomes octagonal, connecting to the barrel via a molding. At the side of the barrel is a pan with a pivoted cover, the pivot rivet has a ring on top to which is attached a length of chain. The serpentine / trigger is pivoted on a rivet through the shaft of the axe and has a simple leaf spring riveted to the trigger that is designed to press against the shaft. A rare item demonstrating the ingenuity of a master gunsmith. The item is covered with a uniform dark brown patina and is in good condition. India, 19th century.
Dimensions: L: 15 in., (38.1 cm.)
