Nicolas de Stael (1914-1955), France, Abstracted House - Oil on canvas Signed on the reverse , right side Dimensions :27.5x23cm Provenance: The estate of Israel and Sarah Beniminovich Notes: The work was acquired from Galerie Bernheim, Paris, located adjacent to the hospital at Place de la Madeleine, where Zeri Sara Herzberg (later Beniminovich) was employed as a nurse. The work subsequently remained in the family collection of Israel and Sara Beniminovich and was later inherited by their descendants. The estate was consigned for sale through Hammersite Auction House Ltd. Summary: The story of Zeri Sara Beniminovich (Herzberg) is a compelling and deeply human narrative closely connected to the Parisian art world of the early 20th century. Zeri Sara worked as a nurse and cared for Alexei Korovin, the son of the renowned Russian painter Konstantin Korovin, during the artist’s later years. Due to Konstantin Korovin’s difficult financial circumstances, payment for medical care was often made in the form of works of art. In 1923, Korovin painted a portrait of Zeri Sara, one of the notable works in which she served as the model. In addition, he presented her with a still life, Vase with Yellow Flowers, accompanied by a handwritten dedication by his son, Alexei. On 23 September 1923, Alexei Korovin wrote a moving note of gratitude on one of the works: “To Nurse Herzberg, thank you very much for your long and devoted care — Alexei.” At the end of 1923, Zeri Sara left Paris and moved to Leipzig, Germany, where she married Zeev Beniminovich. In 1933, the family immigrated to Eretz Israel and settled in Tel Aviv. They had a son, Israel (Sasha) Beniminovich. Following the passing of Israel (Sasha) Beniminovich and later his wife, their estate — including works by Konstantin Korovin, silver objects, Judaica, German furniture, carpets, books, and Rosenthal porcelain — was inherited by their children. Archival photographs are included, showing Zeri Sara Beniminovich with her son Israel Sasha at their home on Nahmani Street, Tel Aviv, as well as with her husband Zeev.
