Georges Braque (1882-1963), Oval Composition, Still Life - Gouache and pencil on paper Signed lower left Dimensions (including frame):46.3x40.5cm Dimensions (excluding frame):23.5x18cm PROVENANCE:Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Collection of Mr. Goldman, Tel Aviv. Private collection, Tel Aviv. NOTES:This work represents a rare preparatory study related to one of Braque’s significant still-life compositions of the late 1930s. The use of watercolor, ink, and pencil, combined with the oval format, is characteristic of the artist’s graphic experimentation during this period. Such preparatory works provide valuable insight into Braque’s working process, particularly his investigation of form, spatial balance, and compositional structure prior to the execution of the final oil painting. Works of this nature are seldom encountered on the market and are of considerable interest from both an art-historical and a collecting perspective. Notes: Accompanied by a written expert opinion issued by Paul Gibbaum, who confirms, to the best of his professional knowledge and judgment, that the work is an original work by Georges Braque. The opinion is based on direct examination of the work, stylistic analysis, and comparison with documented and published works by the artist. According to the expert, the drawing is dated to 1938 and was executed as a preparatory study for the oil painting Verre et Raisins, recorded in the artist’s catalogue raisonné (Georges Braque par Georges Isralov, Paris, 1932, no. 247). The expert examination and documentation were prepared with the assistance of Paula Eichenbaum, acting as assistant DOCUMENTATION:Expert statement dated 10 February.
