Technique Tempera on paper Date Created 1959 Dimensions 46 x 31 cm Condition Good Biography Rabbi Shalom Moskovitz of Saffed (Der Zeegermacher), Naive painter. Born in 1896, live his entire life in Saffed. Began painting at the age of 55, painted mostly Biblical stories. He preserved in his paintings the local tradition that can be linked to Persian Miniaturism. Rabbi Shalom was discovered by the artist Yosl Bergner in 1958, and in his seventies, he attained the rank of foremost international representative of Israeli primitivist painting. His folk-style paintings elevated reality to idyll, emulating children's art in their blend of realism and fantasy, past and present. The flattened paintings were subdivided into well-defined cells, each populated with reiterated motifs of houses, people, trees and animals: quasi-cinematic animation in rhythmic procession of biblical tales, colorful and humorous. Executed line by line, from right to left, the paintings 'read' like a Hebrew text.
