Autographed Letter by the Admor Rabbi Moshe Unger of Tzfas, Son-in-Law of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. Tzfas, 1897

Long letter by the Admor Rabbi Moshe Unger of Tzfas, oldest son-in-law and close disciple of the Admor Divrei Chaim of Sanz.

The final lines of the letter are handwritten, and the letter is autographed by “Hak[atan] Moshe Unger ben HaR[av] Hagaon of Dombrova and son-in-law of Har[av] Hatz[addik] Hagaon Hakadosh of Sanz ztvk”l.

The Admor Rabbi Moshe Unger (circa 1820-1898) was the son of the Admor Rabbi Mordechai Dovid of Dombrova. He wed Rebbetzin Miriam, eldest daughter of the Admor Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, author of the Divrei Chaim. His tombstone attests that he “basked in his [the Divrei Chaim’s] shadow for forty years”.

Rabbi Moshe Unger was a genius, scholar and talented public figure who served as a close confidant and advisor to his venerable father-in-law regarding public and personal matters, most famously in regard to selecting candidates for the Nesius in Eretz Yisrael and fundraising for Kollel Galicia. During his latter years, Rabbi Moshe journeyed to Eretz Yisrael where he founded the community of Sanz chassidim in Tzfas (Rabbeinu Hakadosh MiSanz Vol. 2 p. 424).

His sons-in-law include the Admor Rabbi Yehuda Tzvi Eichenstein of Dolina; the Admor Rabbi Naftali Chaim Horowitz of Dzikov; the Admor Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Horowitz of Ulnayov; and Rabbi Mordechai Dovid Unger of Zavna whose descendants serve as Admorim until this very day.

The present letter was dispatched to the director of the Union of Officers and treasures in Amsterdam regarding funds for the chalukah in Tzfas. The letter then segues into personal matters, in the course of which Rabbi Moshe discusses his physical health and medical expenses.

Tzfas, 1897. Page Size: 26x21 cm. Condition: Good.
