17th Century Kabbalistic Siddur with Kavanos of the Arizal

as Edited by the Kabbalist Rabbi Nosson Shapira.

Siddur for weekdays and Shabbos with the kavanos of the Arizal, arranged by the saintly kabbalist Rabbi Nosson Shapira, author of Meoros Nosson.

The siddur opens with the title: “Sephardic prayer with kavanos, based upon Moreinu Harav Nosson Shapira ztvk”l.”

The present siddur encompasses the order of prayers for weekday, Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh and concludes with Intentions for Learning (leaf 108a); Intentions for Eating (leaf 111a) and Order of Conduct at Night and Krias Shema al Hamittah (leaf 118b and on).

6 parchment leaves containing different Tefillos are bound to the front of the siddur.

The majority of handwritten kabbalistic siddurim with the Arizal’s kavanos are those that were arranged by Rabbi Meir Poppers, but siddurim with the kavanos of the Arizal based on Rabbi Nosson Shapira’s writings are rare.

The kabbalist Harav Nosson Shapira of Yerushalayim departed the Holy Land in 1656 and journeyed to Italy to fundraise for the destitute Yishuv in Jerusalem. He ultimately lived there until his passing in 1662. Rabbi Nosson carried with him many writings containing the wisdom of the Arizal and Rabbi Chaim Vital, which he edited and arranged. He writes that previously, “…these writings were scattered, with one here and one there.”

Rabbi Nosson Shapira compiled the Arizal’s kavanos in tefillah into a single sefer which he named Meoros Nosson; it was widely spread throughout Italy. Later, these writings would be reprinted in various editions, although not in their entirety, in Pri Eitz Chaim (Koritz, 1882) and Machberes Hakodesh (Koritz, 1883).

Italy, 17th Century. Page Count: [125] leaves. Page Size: 13x10 cm. Description: Italian script. Kabbalistic glosses in margins. Condition: Used. The ink on some of the leaves is very light. Tears on margins, all professionally restored.
