Tale of Yehudis. Venice, 1650.
Chanukah Miracle

The tale of Yehudis, The daughter of Yochanan the High Priest, who severed the head of the Greek army general Heliphornus and brought about the Chanukah miracle and eventua salvation of the Jewish people from their Greek oppressors.

The final page features the tale of Daniel.

Allusions to the exploits of Yehudis are found in the writings of the early Rishonim in Tractate Shabbos (23b) when discussing the laws and miracles of Chanukah. Rashi writes, “The miracle transpired by the hand of a woman.” The Ran ibid expounds that the Midrash recounts the story of the daughter of Yochanan who severed the head of the Greek general. Years later, this Midrash was printed in full.

Venice, 1650. [10] leaves. Page size: 15 cm. Page borders. Title page restored. Very rare!

Fascinating preface upon the actions of Yehudis and its sources in Chazal and the Rishonim appears in Mamleches Kohanim (Leiter) pgs. 361-392.
