Bomberg Shas
The complete set of Talmud Bavli was printed for the first time ever in the publishing house of Daniel Bomberg in Venice between the years of 1520-1523. The clear, impressive printing was virtually free of censorship and includes many noteworthy additions and commentaries, some of which were printed from their handwritten manuscripts for the very first time. Three years after publishing of the first edition, Bomberg commenced printing a second edition of the Talmud, completing this colossal project in 1531.

The Daniel Bomberg edition of the Talmud Bavli is thus regarded as the prototype for all following editions of Talmud printed throughout the next five hundred years.

Shas Bomberg   or the ‘Venice Shas’ was the first to establish the classic tzuras hadaf of the gemara and number of leaves in each tractate, a design followed by all subsequent printings. Until today, anyone who wishes to note a page number in Shas uses the page numbering system formulated for this edition.

Professionally restored light defects on title page and scattered pages. Leaf 52 features a slight tear and missing words. New turquoise leather binding. Owner’s signature: Avraham Haim Pinzi of Ferrara.
