Handwoven Persian Soumak Runner – Tribal Animal Design – Iran, 20th Century - A handwoven Persian runner executed in the Soumak flat-weaving technique, most likely made in Iran, possibly in the Shiraz or southwestern Iranian region and inspired by the traditional weaving of the Qashqai tribes. The rug features five diamond-shaped medallions in alternating shades of red and dark blue, densely decorated with stylized horses, deer, birds, roosters and other animals. The light cream-colored field is filled with numerous colorful zoomorphic and geometric motifs. A narrow repeating border surrounds the composition, with fringes at both ends. Soumak is a dense flat-weaving technique that produces a thicker and more textured surface than an ordinary kilim. The reverse displays the characteristic floating threads associated with this weaving method. Dimensions: 165 × 70 cm. Good overall condition, with signs of use, wear, minor irregularities and changes to the fringed edges consistent with age. Please examine the photographs for condition.
