Photo Album – Synagogue of Essen, Germany The Family and Home of Rabbi Dr. Salomon Samuel Essen, Germany | Early 20th century to the late 1930s
An important photographic album documenting the family life and public activity of Salomon Samuel, rabbi of the Liberal Jewish community in Essen, and one of the central figures of German Jewry on the eve of its destruction.
The album contains more than 90 varied photographs, including:
– Photographs of the family home, living rooms, a private library, and a study.
– Three photographic postcards showing the synagogue building from the exterior, and one postcard depicting the synagogue interior.
– Family photographs of Rabbi Salomon Samuel, his wife, their children, and additional family members.
– Childhood photographs of his daughters, the artists Hava Samuel and Edith Samuel, and of their brother Yohanan, a musician, alongside intimate images of everyday family life.
Several album pages bear original pencil inscriptions in German, including names, dates, and family relationships.
The album constitutes a rare visual source for the life of a Liberal rabbi, his household, and the communal institution at the center of his activity, offering a direct glimpse into the cultural and social world of Essen’s Jewish community at its height, prior to the rise of Nazism.
Biography – Dr. Salomon Samuel
Dr. Salomon Samuel was born in 1867 in West Prussia. He was ordained after academic and rabbinical studies in Berlin, and later completed a doctorate in philosophy. In 1894 he was appointed the first rabbi of the Jewish community of Essen, a position he held continuously until his retirement in 1932.
Samuel was identified with the Liberal stream of German Jewry and played a central role in shaping the religious, cultural, and educational life of the community. He was a key figure in the establishment of the Great Synagogue of Essen, inaugurated in 1913, and was involved in its architectural and symbolic conception as a modern and dignified religious institution at the heart of the city.
After his retirement he moved to Berlin. With the intensification of anti Jewish persecution, he was deported in 1942 to Theresienstadt, where he perished. His rabbinical and intellectual work, together with the documentation of his family life, reflects a central chapter in the history of Liberal German Jewry.
More than 90 photographs.
