Memorial Album and Family Chronicle – The Friedländer Family - Germany | Late 19th Century – 1940s
An exceptional archival lot of intimate family and scholarly character, centered on a multi-layered Trauer-Album (Memorial Album) that served for several decades as both a book of remembrance and a family chronicle of the Friedländer family — a prominent German-Jewish rabbinical-bourgeois family encompassing generations of rabbis and intellectuals.
Among its members were:
Anna Friedländer, later the wife of Rabbi Dr. Solomon Samuel,
mother of Hava and Edith Samuel
As well as the philosopher Salomo Friedländer (born 1871)
Central Component
A bound Trauer-Album (Memorial Album):
The opening page is dedicated to the memory of
Ida Friedlaender, née Weiss,
who died in 1891
At the bottom of the same page appears a mourning notice for
Rabbi Dr. Ludwig Friedlaender,
who died on 12 February 1898
The album was most likely compiled initially by
Anna Friedländer (later Anna Samuel) — daughter of Ida and Ludwig Friedlaender —
and was subsequently continued, updated, and preserved by her descendants, foremost Hava Samuel.
The Samuel family itself is not the subject of the album, but is connected to it indirectly through family ties — via Anna Friedländer’s marriage to Rabbi Dr. Samuel, and through the continued curation and preservation of the materials by the next generation.
Contents of the Album
A printed and decorated title page with personal dedication and precise dates of death (Gregorian and Hebrew)
Prayer pages, liturgical poems, and texts in German, Hebrew, and mixed usage
A handwritten annual Yahrzeit table, documenting memorial dates approximately between 1891 and 1940
Handwritten family chronicles, recording births, deaths, marriages, and dramatic life events
A chronological list of municipal rabbis, likely from Schneidemühl, forming part of the family’s historical and rabbinical milieu
Genealogical family tree pages (Stammbaum) with later handwritten additions
Associated Materials Included in the Lot
Original handwritten letters (German) from earlier generations of the family, dating from the late 18th and 19th centuries
Original photographs of family graves and tombstones in a Jewish cemetery, including a family burial plot
Newspaper clippings and mourning notices relating to members of the Friedländer family and their circle
Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony, completed by Hava Samuel and Edith Samuel, documenting the murder of their parents in the ghetto — a powerful link between a long family chronicle and its destruction in the Holocaust
Notes, drafts, and slips bearing family names, likely used for internal organization and editorial purposes
This lot represents a continuous German-Jewish culture of remembrance, in which a private memorial book evolves over time into a family archive and ultimately into a historical testimony.
A rare documentation of generational transition —
from private memory, through conscious family historiography, to formal Holocaust testimony.
An archival lot of outstanding scholarly, historical, and human significance.
