"We are under siege" Hadassah Har Hatzofim, Letter sent with the Red Cross. June 1948. Israel War of Independence
Mount Scopus in East Jerusalem is beyond the walls of the Old City. It held the (old) Hebrew University campus and Hadassah Hospital. Attacks on the site & on traffic to it started right after November 29th. Shelling caused much damage. Ambulances and doctors were not immune and on April 13th 78 were slaughtered on the way. In July the area was demilitarized & stayed that way until 1967.
The letter was sent on June 17, 1948 after the hospital was closed at the end of May due to a lack of supplies, and only a small number of doctors and specialists remained. It describes how they are under siege but are in good health. "...I haven't received a letter from you since February... Today a delegation of the Red Cross is supposed to visit...perhaps they will take our letters to the city...Send a telegram because I don't think letters will reach me...".
