Dina Merhav (1936–2022) was a Croatian-born Israeli sculptor renowned for her large-scale outdoor iron constructions, often depicting birds and angels. Her works are displayed in public spaces worldwide, including Israel, China, India, the United States, and Croatia.
Biography:
Early Life: Born Dina Gross on March 9, 1936, in Vinkovci, Yugoslavia (now Croatia), to a Jewish family. During World War II, her father, Zlatko Gross, was captured as a Royal Yugoslav Army officer and imprisoned in Germany. Dina, her mother Steffi, and her brother Danko escaped to Switzerland via Italy. After the war, the family reunited and, in 1949, immigrated to Israel.
Education: Graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem in 1957.
Career Transition: Initially worked as a graphic designer and educator, teaching at institutions such as the WIZO Haifa Academy of Design and Education, the University of Haifa, and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. In the early 1980s, she shifted her focus to sculpture, studying stone sculpture in Pietrasanta, Italy.
Artistic Focus: From 1989, Merhav specialized in creating sculptures from scrap iron, transforming industrial materials into dynamic forms symbolizing peace and freedom. Her studio was located in Nir Etzion, and she resided in the artists' village of Ein Hod.
Death: Passed away on October 19, 2022, at the age of 86.
Notable Achievements:
Exhibitions: Displayed her works internationally, including a significant exhibition titled "Birds in Flight" in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2013.
