8.º; A-V8, X6; [166] ff.; 210 mm.

A rare and very curious work in which the anonymous author brought together a collection of sentences from the main Greek and Latin authors. The work begins with a prologue and ends with an interesting response to the criticisms that could be made of the compilation, in which the author apologizes for having written in a foreign language, which, as the book was printed in Lisbon, may mean indicating that he had Portuguese nationality. According to D. Manuel, this work is also of typographic importance: «Again, one of the main interests of this work is the cover of the title page. Galharde, once again, used what he had used in the 'Reegra de Santiago', 1548, and in the 'Treaty' of the life of St. John, 1554. But, an important point, if in the Treaty printed in August the cover is , except for the cross of St. James in the laurel wreath, absolutely identical to that in the Reegra of 1548, in the 'Primera parte de las Sentencias', stamped by Galharde three months later, in November 1554, the cover is already mutilated, as it lacks the halberd trophies that adorn the columns. Accordingly, we believe that this book must be the first in which the cover was printed exactly like the one that appeared in the Lusíadas of 1572, which gives it special bibliographic merit.»
