FIRST edition of one of the oldest references to Tibet and an important reference to missionary activities and knowledge of the customs of the Ethiopian region. Compiled from letters sent by Jesuits in India to Fr. Manuel da Veiga, describe the activities of the Jesuits in those territories. The first book deals exclusively with the missionary activities of the Jesuits in Ethiopia, giving an account of indigenous rituals, imprisonment of Jesuit priests by the Moors and the foundation of Jesuit missions in the territory. The second book deals with the journey of D. Afonso Mendes from Lisbon to Ethiopia to replace Pedro Páez as Patriarch of Ethiopia and the way he was received, meetings with sovereigns of the region and other details. The third and final book is entitled "From the Kingdom of Great Tibet, which they call Cathay" and describes the travels and actions of Fr. António Andrade in Tibet, the first European since the s. XIV to enter that eastern territory. Included in this part are some letters from Fr. Antonio Andrade. VERY RARE AND VALUABLE.
