ORDENACÕES e Leis do Reino de Portugal. Lisboa. 1603.

ORDENACÕES e Leis do Reino de Portugal. Recopiladas per Mandado do Muito Alto Catholico & Poderoso Rei Philippe o Pri.º. Lisboa: No Mosteiro de S. Vicente [...] por Pedro Craesbeeck, 1603.

5 partes: [ ]2, A-R8, S5, T10, A-E8, F10, A-L8, A-H8, A-K8, L10, I4; front., [4], 298, [4], 100, [4], 170, [4, 2 br.], 122, [4, 2 br.], 182, [6] pp.; 400 mm. Binding lacking spine; water stained; contemporary annotations on margins, probably of someone related to the law practice.

FIRST EDITION of the great legislative reform carried out by Philip II of Spain. Keeping the tradition of dividing it into five books, the revision work began between 1583 and 1585, with the almost certain collaboration of Jorde de Cabedo, Afonso Vaz Tenreiro and Duarte Nunes de Leão, but according to some historians it is possible that others have collaborated . Although it was concluded during the reign of the first King of the Philippine dynasty, the Law that promulgates the legislative corpus is dated January 11, 1603, therefore already in the reign of Philip III of Spain, being the one that remained in force for the longest time in Portugal. These Ordinances were reprinted several times, still in the 17th century, in 1636, with some amendments, an edition that was later reused, only changing the frontispiece with the name of D. João IV after the success of the Restoration of Independence. Very rare and important.
