The New Germany and the Old Nazis - An Important Investigation into the Resurgence of Nazism in Postwar Germany - First Edition, Copy Signed by the Author - ”The New Germany and the Old Nazis” - by the German-American journalist, economist, and researcher T. H. Tetens - an important investigation into the resurgence of Nazism in postwar Germany. Published by Random House, New York, 1961 - first edition, first printing. Copy signed by the author. An important publication presenting a disturbing investigation into the deeply flawed process of ”denazification” that took place in West Germany after World War II. Tetens argues, and presents evidence, that despite the defeat of the Third Reich, former Nazis and senior Party members succeeded in reintegrating themselves and securing key positions in virtually every sphere of life in West Germany - in the Foreign Office, the judicial system, the police apparatus, the military, and the economy. The book undertakes a factual examination of the situation in postwar Germany - ”What kind of country is this new Germany? Is Nazism 'dead and buried, ' as James B. Conant, our former ambassador in Bonn, believes? Has Germany really changed? If so, where are the hundreds of thousands who once served Hitler's reign of terror faithfully and zealously? And what is life like today for the Jews who still remain in Germany?”  The book describes how many Germans who still retained Nazi views returned to key positions and government institutions in virtually every sphere of life in Germany. The book is based on thousands of reports, documents, and court records - most of them from original German sources. Citing individuals by name, foremost among them Chancellor Adenauer's senior aide Hans Globke, the book documents in detail the dangerous resurgence of Nazism and antisemitism in the ”new” Germany. Among other subjects, it describes notorious incidents of antisemitism, such as the Zind affair and the lenient attitude of the German public toward it, support networks of former Nazi SS members, and evidence of former Nazi criminals who at the time occupied senior positions. The book also presents the plans and active organizations of contemporary Nazi elements, alongside the disgraceful record of judges from the Hitler era who continued to sit on the bench. The book aroused considerable attention upon its publication in 1961 (concurrently with the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem), as it challenged the Western narrative that West Germany had become a democracy completely ”cleansed” of Nazism, and exposed the cover-ups and leniency of the Adenauer government toward members of the old Nazi apparatus. T. H. Tetens was a German journalist who opposed the Nazi regime in the 1930s, was imprisoned in a concentration camp in 1933, escaped and emigrated to the United States, where he served as an adviser to the U.S. Department of Justice and produced numerous studies on fascism and Germany. He died in 1976, but lived to witness the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials in the mid-1960s, Brandt's election, and even his visit to Israel in 1969. 286 pages. Hardcover with the original dust jacket, complete. Good condition.
