описание:
Jewish women selling armbands in the Warsaw Ghetto
Photograph of Jewish women selling armbands marked with the Star of David in the Warsaw Ghetto. Early 1940s.
The armbands in the Warsaw Ghetto were part of the system of identification and segregation imposed upon the Jews by the Nazi regime beginning in 1939. In Poland, Jews were required to wear a white armband bearing a blue Star of David, usually on the right arm. The armbands served as an immediate means of identification in the public sphere, enabling the authorities and the local population to distinguish Jews, restrict their movement, and enforce discriminatory laws upon them. Within the ghetto itself, an internal market also developed for the production and sale of these armbands, at times through the private initiative of seamstresses or merchants, due to the constant need to replace worn or non-compliant armbands.
18x13 cm. Very good condition.
