PICTORIAL REVIEW VAAD HATZALA GERMANY - a survey of photographs - Vaad HaHatzalah in Germany - an impressive and first-of-its-kind photo album, documenting the extensive activity of Vaad HaHatzalah in Germany in the rehabilitation of the lives of Jewish Holocaust survivors - New York 1948.
f the surviving refugees in the DP camps after the war. Presented here one after another are countless photographs documenting the support activity for the survivors, the establishment of kosher kitchens, Torah study in yeshivot that were reestablished after the war, many group photographs of groups of learners after the Holocaust and of various youth groups, Talmud Torahs and orphanages. Also appearing are personal photographs of all the rabbis of the committee, photographs and letters of the Gaon Rabbi Herzog, as well as correspondence of the committee with high-ranking political figures. One of the important early albums extensively surveying the activity of Vaad HaHatzalah close to the time of its operation.
Vaad HaHatzalah, originally established by the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States, concentrated tremendous efforts in postwar Germany to rehabilitate the lives of Holocaust survivors in the DP camps. Its representatives operated on the ground with the American military authorities in order to ensure the unique needs of the religious survivors, from the establishment of kosher kitchens and matzah bakeries to the establishment of yeshivot and schools in camps such as Pocking and Föhrenwald. Beyond material assistance, the committee assumed a decisive spiritual and cultural role in printing the famous edition of the Talmud in Germany, the “Survivors’ Talmud, ” based on the understanding that moral and religious rehabilitation was an essential pillar in rebuilding the lives of the remnants anew. Its activity was characterized by unceasing struggles to improve living conditions, supply sacred objects, and assist in emigration, while serving as a living bridge between American Jewry and the surviving remnant on German soil soaked in blood.
The album before us is the most comprehensive photographic documentation of this activity.
