The Diary of Anne Frank – German-language stage adaptation initiated by Anne’s father, Otto Frank. New York 1957 - First edition
Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank - The Diary of Anne Frank, edited by Marjorie L. Hoover. Published by W.W. Norton & Company, New York, 1957. A German-language stage edition published in the United States at the initiative and with the approval of Anne Frank’s father, Otto Frank. Extremely rare.

Following the success of the play about the life story of Anne Frank in Germany in the 1950s, the idea arose to publish the diary in a theatrical version. German audiences were deeply moved by the play, and it seemed that the message “never again” was well absorbed through the visual presentation, as expressed by one of the newspapers in Germany: "When, after three hours, as if awakening from the deepest dismay, the people in the audience find it difficult to rise from their seats, do not applaud, and leave quietly with bowed heads, this marks the greatness of a moment that must stir even the quietest hearts and shake even the most indifferent nerves." Following the unprecedented impact of the play, more than 2,000 Germans – school students – traveled to Anne’s grave in Bergen-Belsen to lay flowers on the mass grave in which she was buried. Following this success, the idea arose to publish a special edition of the diary specifically in a German-language stage version, intended for a German audience. The present version is abridged and makes use of the most significant passages of the diary relating especially to the persecution of the Jews. The body of the diary is in German, the introduction in English.

Extremely rare. The 1957 edition does not appear in the WorldCat global library catalog, where a 1960 edition is listed.
