Frank Hurley - The Holy City - A book of photographs in an album edition. London, 1949

The Holy City By Frank Hurley, London 1949 - First Edition.

An elegant photo book in an album edition - black and white and color photos using the Paget process of color photography. Australian photographer and adventurer Captain Frank Hurley [1885-1962] served as the official photographer of the A.I.F. in 1917-1918. He taught himself photography and made a name for himself in the postcard industry, where he made a name for himself thanks to the dangerous situations he put himself in to get amazing photos, which included standing in front of an oncoming train to capture it on film. The photographer went to Jerusalem countless times in order to closely trace the landscape of the city and its inhabitants, and his photographs combine artistic elements of a broad landscape perception (the clouds of the sky that join the photographed landscape, portraits of the residents of Jerusalem from a closer view and more), and their composition provides a broad and interesting picture of the city. There are also several panoramic photographs, some on two entire pages.
