The Jew and the Dog - an antisemitic souvenir postcard from Carlsbad, early 20th century

Gruss aus Karlsbad. An early anti-Semitic postcard. Germany, early 20th century.

The postcard describes a group of people waiting in line to vacate their needs. To the right are the men's cells, to the left the women's cells. In the back, a Jew emerges in Eastern European clothing, and because he is unable to resist, he makes his needs in his pants. Those around them react with disgust and clog their noses. In order not to leave room for doubt as to the stench of the Jew, the illustrator drew a dog reminiscent of the Jew in his appearance and standing beside him to say 'the Jew and the dog are dead'. On the left, Printed song hint the Jew's inability to control his needs were printed:

The water's powers are benign

If man can tame and restrain them

But the heavenly power wreaks havoc

If it breaks free and is unleashed

The comparison between Jewish and animal traits was popular in German postcards distributed in the early 20th century. Due to the postcard's popularity among the German population, it was repeated several times in various variations in Marinabad.
