A significant collection of eyewitness accounts and diaries written by survivors of European Jewry during the years 1933–1945. Includes extensive discussion of the writings of Elie Wiesel, as well as the “Scroll of Agony” by Chaim Kaplan of Warsaw. The author examines expressions of despair and hope as they appear in diaries written during the war and under Nazi rule, and demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit in Nazi Germany, which he describes as “a place of organized madness, ” where people living under the shadow of death, persecution, and in concentration camps gave their lives for those beside them - acts that stood in complete contrast to the cruelty of their captors. The author, a professor and graduate of Roosevelt University, Illinois, and Washington University, also taught at Northwestern University, Illinois, as well as in India and West Germany.
