Item Overview
Description:
5 issues of the New Zealand Jewish Chronicle – the central publication of the Jewish community in New Zealand throughout much of the 20th century. Published by the Zionist Council of New Zealand.
Issues:
1951: December
1956: May
1958: February, May, September
The newspaper operated primarily during the second half of the 20th century and remained active for several decades. It served both the Jewish community in New Zealand and the broader Jewish diaspora. It functioned as the official organ of the organized Jewish community in New Zealand, particularly of the local Zionist movement. The paper regularly covered Jewish communal life in the country, Zionist initiatives, cultural events, and news from the Land of Israel and later the State of Israel. It held a clearly Zionist perspective - encouraging immigration to Israel and expressing open support for the Jewish state. The paper combined local reporting on New Zealand’s Jewish community with broad coverage of Jewish world affairs: antisemitic incidents, waves of immigration, news from Israel, and global Zionist activity. Its design was typical of the period—black-and-white or blue-and-white photographs, bold headlines, and simple newsprint. Special holiday editions were published around the Jewish festivals.
Some issues with tears and edge losses to the front page. Overall in moderate – good condition.
