Item Overview

Description:

Collection of issues of the Judeo-Turkish weekly in Ladino, "La Luz de Türkiye" – "The Light of Turkey" – 1953

Collection of 32 issues of the weekly La Luz de Türkiye – "The Light of Turkey" – “A Weekly Political and Social Newspaper, ” a Jewish publication in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) edited by Robert Balli, distributed in the cities of Istanbul and Izmir. Issues from the year 1953, covering the months January to December (mostly consecutive). Rare.

The newspaper combines headlines and content in Ladino, Hebrew, and occasionally Turkish, reflecting the life of the Sephardic Jewish community in Turkey—with an emphasis on religion, culture, Zionism, ties to the new State of Israel, and a strong connection to Sephardic Jewish heritage. The editor and founder of the newspaper was Robert Balli, whose name appears in the masthead. The slogan printed beneath the newspaper’s title appeared in every issue: “Mijor ke dezír es azér, i Mijor ke prometér es realizer” – “Better than promising is doing, and better than saying is fulfilling.” This motto encapsulated the paper’s clearly pragmatic orientation. Many articles in the issues presented here report on events in Israel, the Israeli government, Jewish communities around the world, the phenomenon of antisemitism, and more. One issue from September features a Hebrew headline: “Tizku le’shanim rabbot” (May you merit many years), and includes words by Rabbi Saban on the spiritual significance of the month of Elul. Also included is an issue titled “Moadim le’simcha”, released in preparation for Yom Kippur of that year, as well as one for Hanukkah. For major Jewish holidays, the paper typically presented the headline in Hebrew, while the rest of the issue—entirely in Ladino—focused on the Jewish themes of the holiday.
