Item Overview
Description:
"Journées Nationales du Souvenir – Compiègne – du 15 au 18 août 1946" – large poster issued for the “National Days of Remembrance” event held in Compiègne, France, from August 15 to 18, 1946. The event was organized by several French associations of veterans and resistance members in memory of their comrades who perished in the war. Design by Guy Georget (a renowned French designer active during the 1940s–70s; printed signature at upper right). Publisher and printer: Imp. Moderne, Paris – Moderne Press, Paris.
The “National Days of Remembrance” event was organized by French associations of veterans, prisoners of war, deportees, and resistance members. At the center of the poster, a ribbon in the colors of the Tricolore (the French flag – blue, white, and red) waves prominently, symbolizing liberation and the French Republic. The illustrated figures in the center are former prisoners: one wearing the striped uniform of a concentration camp inmate, another with a soldier’s helmet, a third wearing a labor camp cap, and a fourth – a patriotic figure representing France. In the background – ruins and battlefields.
The event organizers mentioned at the bottom include: the French Union of War Veterans, the National Federation of Prisoners of War, the National Federation of Deportees and Internees, Resistance Fighters and Patriots, the National Federation of Forced Labor Deportees, and a patriotic figure representing France.
120x80 cm. Fold marks and light creases. Good condition.
