Item Overview
Description:
"If Ben-Gurion pushes for a civil war, he will get one" – a rare poster by the Etzel (Irgun) organization threatening a response by fire against members of the Haganah who attack its men
"An end to the rioters’ rampage" – "We are not subdued by fire nor by death" – an especially forceful poster by the Etzel (Irgun) organization, issued in response to armed attacks carried out against its members while they were posting propaganda notices. The poster threatens: "We will return fire for fire." Cheshvan 5708- October–November 1947.
The poster details serious incidents in which Etzel members, who came to post notices in the moshavot and in the south, were attacked by “rioters” from the Haganah organization in Tel Aviv, Bat Yam, and other locations, and it warns:
"We do not want altercations with the Haganah, but under no circumstances will we allow sabotage of our organization, silencing of our voice, or abuse of our members. We will respond to every abuse and assault. And we will return fire for fire. We hereby declare and warn: we do not want a civil war. But it is becoming increasingly clear that Ben-Gurion is pushing for a civil war, he will get one. We are not frightened by threats. We are not subdued by fire nor by death. No man has yet been born who can break the spirit of the brother of Dov Gruner, the National Military Organization in the Land of Israel. Cheshvan 5708 (1947)."
During the War of Independence, tensions and clashes between the Etzel and Lehi continued, despite both acting in the name of the struggle for independence. Open confrontations took place in Jerusalem, including friction over control of neighborhoods and weapons acquisition routes, and there were even reports of mutual kidnappings or arrests among activists. These struggles reflected a deeper tension over shaping the identity of the emerging state between an evolving political establishment and revolutionary Revisionist factions.
