Item Overview

Description:

“Socialist Germany” – How Adolf Hitler’s “New Germany” Cares for the Improvement of the German Worker’s Life – a rare publication

L’Allemagne Socialiste – “Socialist Germany” – a Nazi propaganda booklet in French, distributed in the early 1940s during and after the military campaign in France. Intended to present the image of the Third Reich to the French public as a revolutionary, modern, and “social-popular” state under the leadership of Adolf Hitler.

At the opening of the booklet appears a photograph of Adolf Hitler and the caption: “En tout temps un facteur a été décisif: l’action!” – “At all times, one factor has been decisive: action!”.

A special, well-designed propaganda booklet, presenting through carefully composed black-and-white photographs combined with groundbreaking color graphics for its time, the concept of German “National Socialism” as a social model promising employment, order, welfare policy, housing, healthcare, and industrial strength. This was the narrative the Nazi propaganda machine sought to export to foreign audiences: Hitler’s regime as a total social solution. Slogans such as “The Führer and the people are one, ” and “Germany is fortunate to have a united people of 16.2 million children and 65 million intellectual workers, ” appear at the beginning of the booklet, alongside images of masses of German workers saluting the Führer with raised arms. The booklet goes on to enumerate the supposed advantages of socialism under Adolf Hitler’s leadership: On-site and off-site medical care, state-of-the-art facilities for physical fitness, sports, and relaxation, special support for mothers and children, holiday and rest homes well-situated for the working class, and more. In the field of the arts, it declares: “Art and culture belong to the people. The new Germany has opened theaters, concert halls, and museums for the workers’ well-being… within the community, the worker has the rights he deserves…”. The booklet contains countless photographs displaying the well-being of the German worker portraying how the “New Germany” provides for all of his and his family’s needs: creating pleasant and spacious homes, offering cultural opportunities, theaters, concert halls, museums, sports programs, dedicated medical care, and support for his entire household. "In New Germany, young workers have a thousand opportunities to organize leisure activities that bring them joy, physical and mental health, " it states, leaving the reader with the impression of an ideal society.

In its educational section, the booklet presents schools and “grand castles” where “the most talented workers’ children are educated and later become leaders of Socialist Germany.” Finally, it presents the German military, declaring: “They will know how to defend their socialism from the enemy.” Deliberately, the booklet avoids any mention of the racial ideology, antisemitism, and violence that were at the core of actual National Socialism. Instead, it functions as a highly persuasive piece of positive-spirited propaganda.
